I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.
Why?
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?
I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.
Are all these movies good?
Oh gosh no. But I recommend all of them to the adventurous viewer.
What’s with the CWs?
In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun. For those folks, I include content warnings. That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.
Who are you, aside from the mayor?
I’m Shaenon K. Garrity. I’m mostly a cartoonist. I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.
I also did not think of this as a horror movie, but as weird sci-fi, I suppose. One thing that has been interesting to me in following this blog is that I generally think I’m not into horror movies, but there have been many films listed on the site that I’ve seen, and a few that are among my favorites.
We’ve seen SF mysteries, adventures, romances, pornography, comedy, tragedy, horror, satire, Westerns, soap operas, war stories, ghost stories, family epics, moral parables, mythic epics, spy thrillers, and probably more genres I couldn’t think of in 30 seconds.
Heck, in modern times, SF arguably overlaps real life!
All genres overlap, really. There are no boundaries! The categories are coming from inside the house!
But you can like stuff from a genre you’re not fond of. I’m not a fan of zombies. I consider them rather boring and I’ve never understood people’s fascination with them. But I liked Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead. I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Walking Dead. And I have three zombie games on by game shelf (which is probably larger than my collection of horror movies entirely).
This is definitely horror (body, certainly), but there’s a lot going on. There’s practical effects I’ve only ever seen in one other movie (bizarrely, “The Wizard Of Speed And Time”, which is about as far from this genre as you can get). There’s also kinky shit that I’ve never seen anywhere else (I’m sure there’s plenty like this out there, I just don’t seek it out). I would categorize this film as a Borg Orientation video: “Your New Body And You: What To Expect”.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but I can EASILY picture you being highly amused by something that would horrify most people.
PS: Available on SHUDDER.COM.
Huh. Somehow I never processed this as a horror movie, despite it being horrifying throughout.
I think I must have a separate mental slot for “weird avant-garde surrealist shit.”

The thing is, SF overlaps with all other genres.

I always thought of it as horror, but then I’ll categorize anything as “Horror” if there’s an excuse to do so!
