I select a thematically appropriate horror movie for each day of the year and tell you about it.
Why?
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
How do you get to decide what qualifies as a horror movie and where each one goes on the calendar?
I am the Mayor of Horror Movies.
Are all these movies good?
Oh gosh no. But I recommend all of them to the adventurous viewer.
What’s with the CWs?
In horror movies, disturbing material is part of the entertainment package. But for some viewers, elements like sexual violence or bigotry ruin the fun. For those folks, I include content warnings. That said, the warnings are based on my personal reactions and should not be expected to cover all potential cinematic skeeviness, so proceed with caution.
Who are you, aside from the mayor?
I’m Shaenon K. Garrity. I’m mostly a cartoonist. I watch a lot of scary movies while I draw cartoons.
This movie is the sole reason why I can never eat Jell-O anymore…
Speaking of killer desserts, is there any chance of seeing The Stuff show up on this calendar? Please say yes–you just gotta love the irony of a dessert that eats YOU!
There’s one scene in the original, early on when the blob is rolling around in the dark right after eating its first victim, that scared my 5-yr-old self (who was a huge monster movie fan) so badly that I stopped watching it and did not see the whole thing until several years later.
My dad was a but odd, but he instilled in me a love of monster movies that persists to this day. I was rarely frightened by the monsters because he had me root for them – and posed the thought experiment on my toddler brain to look at what was happening from the monster’s POV. We rooted for the monsters … most of the time.
‘The Blob’ was just about the only monster that I can think of that scared me as a tiny podling because there was nothing there that I could sympathize with – or that my dad could offer for us to cheer about.
Got this out of the library the other day – I forgot it was actually in color (I only ever watched it on B&W TV sets). Good movie, and I even figured out when my 5-yr-old self got scared and changed the channel.
He was just Steven McQueen in those days. Not old enough to be a full Steve!
